Some of these patches are for making sure that Oblivion doesn't crash when run on hardware which lacks certain new functionality. I bought Oblivion from Steam and realized I couldn't play the game without using the Oldblivion patch. Allows people with older graphics cards pre-DirectX9 to play the game. I know this is slightly offtopic here, but the message button doesn't seem to work and I wanted to send a message to Crookedmouth.
